Bill Rapp Subaru finds out for drivers in Syracuse, Oneida, and Liverpool with this Subaru WRX vs. Subaru WRX STI comparison.
Subaru WRX vs Subaru WRX STI: Performance Specs
The 2020 Subaru WRX is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder SUBARU BOXER® engine that gets up to 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This gets paired with a standard 6-speed manual transmission, but a Sport Lineartronic® Transmission is also available.
The automatic transmission still offers control over the gear shifting with 6- and 8-speed manual modes and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
The Subaru WRX STI runs on a 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder SUBARU BOXER® engine that can reach up to 310 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque. Working alongside this engine you'll have a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission.
For even more control and customization over your ride, the Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) feature lets you switch among three driving modes: Sport, Sport Sharp, and Push Intelligent. It's available on the WRX, but standard on the WRX STI.
Subaru WRX vs WRX STI: Drivetrain & Suspension
Like nearly every Subaru vehicle, the Subaru WRX and WRX STI have standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and a Traction Control System for safety and stability. They also come with Active Torque Vectoring for better handling and agility.
The WRX STI takes its ability to grip a road one step further, though, with standard Driver Controlled Center Differential All-Wheel Drive. It lets you vary torque distribution to either the front or rear wheels, so you'll have a quicker response to changing roads!
The two sedans also sit on different suspensions. The WRX rides on a sport-tuned 4-wheel independent suspension, while the WRX STI has its own high-performance STI sport-tuned 4-wheel independent suspension.
WRX vs WRX STI: Design
You're sure to notice some differences between the Subaru WRX and the Subaru WRX STI as soon as they roll up. The easiest one to spot is probably the rear spoiler.
The Subaru WRX has a subtle spoiler on the trunk that keeps a low profile. The WRX STI has a large rear spoiler that stands high above the trunk. It makes a bold impression and improves aerodynamics.
You may also catch some differences up front. For example, the WRX has a pair of fog lights, while the WRX STI removes them for extra intake vents. The STI also catches your eye with a pair of bright yellow exposed brake calipers on the front wheels.
The interiors also have their own feel. The WRX STI gives you unique STI accents on the center console and a signature STI-design leather-wrapped steering wheel with red stitching and a flat bottom!
