Midsize SUVs, like the Subaru Outback and the Ford Edge, have become trusted vehicles by providing everyone from outdoor lovers to families with safe, versatile rides with lots of features. So, how do these two models stack up against each other?

Bill Rapp Subaru finds out and helps drivers in Syracuse, Oneida, and Liverpool decide which one is right for you with this 2020 Subaru Outback vs. 2020 Ford Edge comparison.

2020 Subaru Outback vs 2020 Ford Edge Safety

The 2020 Subaru Outback and the 2020 Ford Edge are designed to protect both families and drivers who are taking their SUV off-roading. Each one features reliable airbags and seat belt pretensioners.

The Outback offers more control, though, with standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and a Traction Control System. While all-wheel drive is available on the Ford, front-wheel drive is standard.

These SUVs also use driver-assistance features to help prevent accidents. The EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology package comes standard on all Subaru Outback trim levels and includes many safety features, such as:

  • Pre-Collison Braking
  • Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering
  • Lane Departure and Sway Warning
  • Pre-Collison Throttle Management

While some of these features are also standard on the Ford Edge, not all of them are included. For example, you won't find a standard adaptive cruise control feature with the 2020 Edge.

Outback vs Edge Performance

Both the 2020 Outback and the 2020 Edge offer a lineup of powerful engines to choose from. The big difference between how they'll perform during your drive is their fuel economy.

The Subaru Outback gets an EPA-estimated 26 city/33 highway MPG. It's able to remain efficient throughout your drive thanks to a smart-shifting Lineartronic® Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and an Active Valve Control System.

The 2020 Ford Edge isn't nearly as efficient. It only gets an EPA-estimated 21 city/29 highway MPG. While it's versatile, its 8-speed automatic transmission doesn't help it get the same fuel economy as a CVT.

2020 Outback vs 2020 Edge Infotainment

The Subaru Outback and the Ford Edge are both loaded with great features to help you enjoy your drive. Each one offers a user-friendly infotainment system with navigation and Bluetooth® compatibility.

The Outback makes it a little easier to access all the apps you want by making Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ standard on all trims. While the Ford Edge is also compatible with both of these, they're only standard on the higher trim levels.

The Subaru also makes it easier to see where you're going. Its base trim has a 7-inch screen in your dashboard that will show you full-color maps, turn-by-turn directions, traffic information, and much more. There's also an available 11.6-inch SUBARU STARLINK® Multimedia Plus system. The Ford Edge does not offer comparable screen size options.

Test Drive the Subaru Outback

While both these vehicles are great choices, ultimately, it's clear that the Subaru Outback outperforms the Ford Edge in crucial categories, including performance, safety, and technology.
