When you're in the market for a new sedan, the choices are nearly endless. Industry leaders from Toyota, Honda, Ford, Nissan, and Hyundai dominate the market, but there are also great and even better choices from competitors like Subaru.

Two of the best midsize sedans on the road today are the Subaru Legacy and the Mazda6. Bill Rapp Subaru is pleased to offer a comparison of the 2016 Subaru Legacy vs. the 2016 Mazda6 for our Oneida, Liverpool, and Syracuse customers.

2016 Subaru Legacy vs. 2016 Mazda6

Both the Legacy and the Mazda had recent complete redesigns-the Legacy in 2015 and the Mazda in 2014-so most of the changes these vehicles face this model year are minor tweaks and upgrades.

In the end, however, the Subaru's more recent redesign gives it an edge in features, technology, gas mileage, and performance over the Mazda6.

Performance and Coverage

Both the 2016 Legacy and the Mazda6 are heavy lifters in terms of reliability, performance, and coverage. The Mazda6's four-cylinder engine offers acceptable acceleration and agile handling, which adds a degree of charm and fun to the driving experience.

The Legacy, however, continues to build on an already-impressive redesign with solid acceleration, responsive handling, an even quieter interior, and all-wheel drive as a standard feature on all models.

Fuel Economy Comparison

Fuel economy is tricky-every car is different, with its own quirks, and actual driving experience will often conflict with EPA-estimated numbers. However, those estimated numbers do give an edge to the Mazda6 if you choose the i-ELOOP option, which boosts economy. However, the base model is about equal to the Subaru, which also delivers standard all-wheel drive, which the Mazda can't beat.

Safety Features of the Subaru Legacy and Mazda6

Both of these cars have, for several years, boasted five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and top ratings for safety from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. They both offer blind-spot monitoring, forward collision alerts, lane-departure warning, rear-cross traffic alerts, backup cameras, and a laundry list of other features and options from anti-lock brakes to all the right airbags.

What puts the Legacy ahead in this area is that you get all of these features for a more economical investment than you would with the Mazda.

Subaru vs. Mazda Technology

Technology is the area that really makes or breaks sedans today, and again, both of these cars offer impressive packages. From adaptive cruise control to keyless entry and more, it's all here for the taking. Base features on the Mazda include USB audio, Mazda Connect with 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, HD radio tuner, and a rearview camera.

The 2016 Subaru Legacy at its base level delivers full power accessories, a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity, a four-speaker CD sound system, HD and satellite radio, USB interface, auxiliary audio, smartphone integration, and 6.2-inch touchscreen.

In the end, the Legacy offers more at the base level and builds from there.
