When buying a new vehicle, fuel economy is an important factor to consider. The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek has three different engine options to choose from, each made for fuel efficiency so you can keep your adventures going.Â
To give you a look at the Subaru Crosstrek's fuel economy, Bill Rapp Subaru has put together this review. Drivers near Syracuse, Oneida, and Liverpool, NY, should read on!
Crosstrek MPG
The Subaru Crosstrek has two gas engine options and one hybrid engine option to choose from. The first engine, which comes standard on the Crosstrek and Crosstrek Premium trims, is the 2.0L SUBARU BOXER® 4-cylinder engine with an output of 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. You'll go far with the EPA-estimated 28 city/33 highway MPG when equipped with the available Lineartronic® Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).Â

The next engine is the 2.5L SUBARU BOXER® 4-cylinder and comes standard on the Crosstrek Sport and Crosstrek Limited trims. You'll get a little more power, with up to 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. With this engine, your fuel economy is about the same as the first, with an EPA-estimated 27 city/34 highway MPG.
The third engine option is the hybrid engine. It is a 2.0L SUBARU BOXER® 4-cylinder engine combined with a permanent magnet AC synchronous motor. You'll get 148 total horsepower and 149 lb-ft of torque with an EPA-estimated 90 miles MPGe (miles per gallon gasoline-equivalent).
Crosstrek Capability
The Crosstrek is always ready for your next road trip adventure. To give you a good driving experience, the Crosstrek comes standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. This system optimizes traction and balance so you have more performance and control when road conditions aren't ideal or the terrain is rough.
If you want to give off-roading a try, the Crosstrek has 8.7 inches of ground clearance and features the available X-MODE® with Hill Descent Control. X-MODE® increases all-wheel drive engagement to help provide traction on low-friction surfaces. The standard dual-function X-MODE® on the Sport trim even has settings for Deep Snow and Mud.
Tips to Increase Fuel Economy

Regardless of which engine you choose, there are ways you can improve your fuel economy so your Crosstrek spends more time on the road and less time at the gas station. The first way is to make sure regular maintenance is performed. Regular maintenance will ensure your Crosstrek is in tip-top shape so it will keep performing well.
Some other tips include:
- Removing extra items from your Crosstrek: Extra weight in your vehicle means it takes more gas to get your vehicle up to speed.
- Avoid excess idling: While you're parked and your engine is running, your vehicle is still using gas.
- Follow the speed limit: The faster you drive, the more gas you'll use.
