2018 Subaru Outback Towing Capacity

With the 2018 Subaru Outback, you'll be able to carry lots of cargo for your next family road trip. In the trunk, there's 35.5 cubic feet of space.

If you need to carry something long, you can tie it to the roof rails or fold the seats down for 73.3 cubic feet of cargo room. However, let's say you need to move something bigger, like some dirt bikes or a trailer. The Outback has you covered.

With the available tow hitch, the 2018 Subaru Outback has a maximum towing capacity of up to 2,700 pounds. The hitch is just as tough and durable as the rest of the car with a tongue weight of 200 pounds.

Engine & Power

2018 Outback Towing CapacitySo, what kind of power does the 2018 Subaru Outback have under the hood that lets you carry all this cargo? There are two options, with both offering a smart design and fun performance.

The first option is a 2.5L 4-cylinder SUBARU BOXER® engine that generates 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with a Lineartronic® Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with Adaptive Control.

The larger and sportier option is a 3.6L 6-cylinder SUBARU BOXER® engine that produces 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. This engine works with a powerful Lineartronic® High-Torque CVT.

The CVT technology is designed to maximize power and engine output while also making their performance more efficient. Steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters give you the freedom to control the transmission's gear shifting.

These engines power the Subaru Outback to tow this cargo, but the drivetrain is what helps keep your payload under control.

With standard all-wheel drive, there's plenty of features to keep your ride stable and under control. Vehicle Dynamic Control uses sensors to measure G-forces, steering angle, and speed. Then, it can reduce torque or apply braking to keep everything steady.

On top of that, X-MODE® maintains traction while Hill Descent Control can help you bring your payload downhill by maintaining a safe, consistent speed.

2018 Subaru Outback Tow Hitch Features

Subaru Outback Towing FeaturesThe tow hitch on the 2018 Subaru Outback can be used to carry smaller cargo, too. The Thule® Bike Carrier lets you easily carry bikes to the nearest trail. It's even equipped with an anti-sway cage to prevent bike-to-vehicle and bike-to-bike contact during the drive.

When not in use, the tow hitch can be covered with a stylish hitch cap that shows Subaru's iconic logo against a black background.

The standard Rear-Vision Camera will help you with hooking up to your cargo. It projects a live video onto your dashboard monitor, so you'll have an easier time lining up or backing your trailer into place before unloading.
